Vitamin B6 and Your Nerves: How Much Is Too Much?
Your body needs only 1.3 to 1.7 mg of vitamin B6 a day, yet high doses taken for months can damage nerves. The US upper limit is 100 mg a day and Europe's is 12 mg. Nerve Savior lists B6 seventh in a 600 mg blend with no amount, so it could hold up to about 86 mg per serving.

The basics
How much vitamin B6 do adults need each day?
The daily vitamin B6 target is 1.3 mg from age 19 to 50, then 1.7 mg for men and 1.5 mg for women over 50 (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).
B6 is also added to many multivitamins, B-complex pills and "nerve" formulas. Too little B6 can cause nerve symptoms, and so can too much.

The risk
Can too much vitamin B6 cause neuropathy?
Yes. Excess vitamin B6 is one of the two best-known vitamin causes of peripheral neuropathy, along with low B12 (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). The damage is usually sensory: tingling, burning or numbness.
People who took 1 to 6 grams of pyridoxine a day for 12 to 40 months developed severe, worsening sensory neuropathy (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). Since then, several reports have described nerve symptoms at doses below 500 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).
By October 31, 2025, Australia's medicines regulator held 250 reports of peripheral neuropathy linked to B6, plus 162 using looser terms such as burning (TGA Australia, Vitamin B6 safety update).
None of this means a small amount is dangerous. Dose and time both matter, and stacking several products for months deserves a second look.
The limits
What is the safe upper limit for vitamin B6?
Regulators read the same evidence and drew different lines.
| Where | Rule | Daily amount | Since |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults | 100 mg | Current US limit |
| European Union (EFSA) | Adult upper limit, set after reviews linking B6 to neuropathy | 12 mg | 2023 |
| Australia | Label must tell users to stop if tingling, burning or numbness appears | Over 10 mg | March 1, 2022 |
| Australia | Pharmacist involvement needed | Over 50 mg, up to 200 mg | From June 1, 2027 |
| Australia | Prescription needed | Over 200 mg | From June 1, 2027 |
| Nerve Savior label | B6 listed inside a 600 mg blend | Not published | Current bottle |
The US number is a ceiling, not a target. To stay inside the strictest line, watch for 12 mg a day from all supplements combined.
Blend math
How much vitamin B6 is in Nerve Savior?
No one outside the maker knows. The order of the list sets the most it could be.
- 1Himalayan Pink Salt55 to 600 mg
- 2Cinnamon Extract0 to 300 mg
- 3AGP Choline (alpha-GPC)0 to 200 mg
- 4Bacopa Monnieri (20%)0 to 150 mg
- 5Lutein (5%)0 to 120 mg5% lutein: at most about 6 mg of lutein
- 6Bilberry Leaf Powder0 to 100 mg
- 7Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine)0 to 86 mgCould be far above the 1.3-1.7 mg RDA; the label does not say
- 8Gingko Biloba Powder0 to 75 mg
- 9Vitamin B12 (as Cyanocobalamin 1%)0 to 67 mg1% B12: at most about 667 mcg of B12
- 10Zeaxanthin (5%)0 to 60 mg5% zeaxanthin: at most 3 mg
- 11Green Tea Extract (50%)0 to 55 mg
Ingredients in a blend are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 600 ÷ k mg. That is our math from the label, not a lab test. The real amounts are probably much lower, but the label does not say.
In seventh place, B6 cannot weigh more than 600 divided by 7, or about 86 mg. The true figure could be a fraction of a milligram, or several times Europe's limit.
FDA's labeling guide says vitamins and other nutrients with a Daily Value should be listed on their own, each with its weight (FDA, Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide). Nerve Savior gives B6 and B12 no weights, which appears inconsistent with FDA guidance. See the Nerve Savior Supplement Facts decoded.

Order nowWarning signs
What are the signs of too much vitamin B6?
The main sign is new or worsening tingling, burning or numbness, often in the hands or feet. These are the same words Australia requires on higher-dose labels (TGA Australia, Vitamin B6 safety update). The symptom someone buys a nerve formula for can also be a sign of too much B6.
Stop the B6 products and call your doctor. Bring every bottle to the visit. Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body is different: it is an emergency, so call 911.
Other causes include diabetes, alcohol, thyroid disease and low B12 (Mayo Clinic, Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms). See the tingling and numbness guide.
Compare
Vitamin B6 vs B12 for nerves: what is the difference?
Both are B vitamins tied to nerves. They behave very differently at high doses.
Vitamin B6
Adults need 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day. High doses over months can cause sensory neuropathy, so the US sets an upper limit of 100 mg and Europe sets 12 mg (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). In Nerve Savior: up to about 86 mg per serving, amount not printed.
Vitamin B12
Adults need 2.4 mcg a day, and no upper limit has been set because high doses are generally considered safe. A low level can cause numbness and tingling (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). In Nerve Savior: up to about 667 mcg per serving, amount not printed.
B12 helps nerves when a test shows you are low. Metformin and acid reducers can lower it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). See who should get a B12 test and the vitamin B6 profile.

FAQ
Vitamin B6 and nerve health FAQ
Can vitamin B6 cause neuropathy?
Yes. Taking too much vitamin B6 over time is a well-known cause of sensory peripheral neuropathy, the kind that brings tingling, burning or numbness. The worst cases involved grams a day for months, but reports also describe symptoms below 500 mg a day. Low B6 can cause nerve problems too, so balance matters.
How much vitamin B6 is too much per day?
In the United States, the adult upper limit is 100 mg a day from all sources. Europe's food safety agency set a much lower adult limit of 12 mg a day in 2023. Australia requires a tingling warning on products with more than 10 mg a day. Your doctor can tell you which line fits you.
What are the first signs of too much B6?
The usual first signs are tingling, burning or numbness, often in the hands or feet. They can creep in slowly, which makes them easy to blame on something else. If they start or worsen while you take B6, stop the B6 products and call your doctor, bringing every label with you.
Why did Europe lower its vitamin B6 limit to 12 mg?
The European Food Safety Authority set a 12 mg adult limit in 2023 after reviewing reports that linked vitamin B6 to peripheral neuropathy. It is far below the US limit of 100 mg. Australia has moved in the same direction, with label warnings and tighter sales rules starting in June 2027.
Why doesn't the Nerve Savior label give a B6 amount?
Nerve Savior lists vitamin B6 inside a 600 mg proprietary blend, and blends show only a total weight. FDA guidance says vitamins should be listed separately with their weights, so this appears inconsistent with that guidance. You can ask the seller for the B6 milligrams before you buy.
Can I take Nerve Savior with a B-complex vitamin?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, because both may contain vitamin B6. A B-complex label shows its B6 milligrams, but Nerve Savior's could be anywhere from almost none to about 86 mg per serving. Added together, the total could pass Europe's 12 mg limit or even approach the US limit.
Is vitamin B6 or B12 better for tingling feet?
Neither is a fix on its own. B12 helps when a blood test shows a low level, and low B12 is a common, treatable cause of tingling. Extra B6 does not have that track record, and too much can cause tingling. Finding the cause with your doctor comes first.
